UMAINE TRAVELS TO PHILADELPHIA TO PLAY ST. JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY IN HOOPS

Maine University’s Men’s basketball team heads to Philadelphia today to take on perennial Atlantic 10 power Saint Joseph’s University. The Hawks, from the famed Big 5 fraternity of schools, sit atop the A-10 Conference with a 2-1 record, and an uncharacteristic 4-5 win loss record overall. The Black Bears, sporting a 3-8 record, are in seventh place in the America East Conference. A win for the Black Bears over a team of Saint Joe’s stature would be monumental for its’ program, and reputation.

WORTH THE PRICE OF ADMISSION-AS PENN STATE BARELY ESCAPES THE PP&L

In a setting that would rival any of the previous national final stages, Lehigh University, in conjunction with the officials of the PPL Arena, dressed up the joint, giving it a national championship final appearance, and drawing rave reviews in the process. And did I mention, the home team Mountain Hawks wrestled up to the matches billing, giving the number 1 ranked Nittany Lions, all they could handle before succumbing to the nationally loaded wrestling team by a 23-19 score. Penn State, wrestling without two of their studs stars in their explosive lineup, which boasts 5 national champions from 2017, needed a desperation win from heavyweight Nick Nevils to hold off game (redshirt) freshman Jordan Wolf, to secure the win. As fans filed into the arena, and began taking in the sights, one of the more poignant scenes (a portend of things to come maybe) of the entire night was a pre-match appearance of Lehigh’s current heavyweight Jordan Wolf, absent of his wrestling mates, on center stage going through a walk through with former Lehigh wrestling legend, and former NCAA Champion Zach Rey.

The two seemed to be totally engrossed in conversation! What were they talking about? Well, whatever it was, Jordan followed it to the letter, because he came within inches of pulling off one of the more dramatic wins in Mountain Hawk sports history. If you could have stretched that circle by about another foot, or so, Nevil probably loses, and you would have seen pandemonium inside the PP &L! Just minutes after Wolf’s and Rey’s appearance, you could see a small contingent of Lehigh, and Penn State wrestlers congregating at mat side, and sampling the feel good moment the setup generated throughout the arena. As fans trickled in, the place was abuzz with compliments of wow, and awesome. With just about every smart phone in attendance filming the amazing transition, or taking pictures, I couldn’t help but wonder, what a night this was going to be for those in attendance, and what a match they would all find waiting for them!
